View ProjectsWhat We Manage
The North West North Wales Coastal Group oversees the management over 500km of coastline from the Great Ormes Head to the Scottish border. The North West coast supports is home to many communities, supports varied industries and is an area of environmental significance, with over 80% of coastline protected for its habitat and wildlife.
How we Manage the Coast
The coastline is a dynamic place that is constantly changing. Climate change means that these changes are predicted to happen faster and more frequently, making it the biggest challenge we face. There has been increased flooding over the past decade, and sea level will continue to rise, with an increased flood risk around the coast. Understanding the challenges we face can allow us to proactively target our resources to manage risk.
Undertake monitoring of coastal processes to understand where the current risk is, and predict where the longer-term risk is
Undertake inspections of coastal defences to understand their condition
Use this information to inform where we target flood and coastal erosion risk management works and inform maintenance programmes for current defences
Continue to monitor the coast and use information from the most recent reports and guidance e.g. UKCP18 to inform our understanding of risk
